If you’re an Android user and in the market for a new smartwatch, I recommend picking this up instead of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and the last-gen Pixel Watch 3. Here’s why.
I’m not a fan of smartwatches, but I like the Pixel Watch 4
I don’t usually wear a smartwatch because I don’t like having a digital screen on my wrist. I don’t want to be available to everyone all the time, so I keep my notifications off – but that’s a story for another day.
Unlike most smartwatches, the Pixel Watch 4 is stylish, elegant and looks good on the wrist. While the Apple Watch can’t beat its sporty looks, Google’s wearable Dress Watch can be just as good a sports watch.
I love the screen because I like to have black dials on my watch faces. And its brightness increases to 3,000nits – 1,000nits more than Apple’s Series 11. That being said, both watches are still pretty bright. I had no problems reading with the Pixel Watch 4, and I loved the contrast of its AMOLED panel.
Pixel Watch 4 comes with Google’s most accurate sleep tracking and sleep stage detection yet. My sleep data is presented in an easy to understand way. Plus, it automatically detects my long walk sessions and records heart rate information.
If you’re interested in health monitoring, you can also use Gemini, developed in collaboration with Fitbit, as a personal health coach to create customized sleep and activity regimens tailored to your needs.
As a bonus for those who plan to use this smartwatch for a few years, Google has made the Pixel Watch 4’s battery and display replaceable. According to teardown experts I fix itIt is “the most repairable smartwatch on the market”. So, if your new Google smartwatch runs out of battery or has a broken display, you can replace it with a new one, and avoid the need to buy a new wearable altogether.
This solved my biggest pet peeve with smartwatches
The Google Pixel Watch 4 lasted longer on my wrist than any other smartwatch this year due to its superior battery life. I’m getting a full day and two nights of sleep tracking with ease of use. I charge it every other day.
Officially, it’s supposed to last 30 days, but in my experience, it goes even further than that (probably because I don’t workout regularly and have my notifications off most of the day). In similar usage, the Apple Watch Series 11 lasted a full day for me, and that’s it. If you work out regularly and keep notifications enabled for most of the day, you can expect a Google wearable to last all day with a nightly sleep tracking insight.
Google also introduced a new charging dock with its new generation. Wearable. Pixel Watch 4 also comes with an updated charging mechanism. Instead of flat charging, which requires you to perfectly align the magnets to start charging on the Pixel Watch 3, the Watch 4 snaps instantly into place with a side-charging port. It has a nice dock and charges faster than before.
However, this is an extra wire to carry around when traveling. While not needing to charge my Pixel Watch 4 every day is a godsend, it did miss the convenience of third-party accessories after shifting from the Apple Watch.
In the Apple ecosystem, I can use products like Satechi 3-in-1 Wireless Charger So that I have to minimize the number of wires I have to carry with me while travelling. In contrast, the Pixel Watch 4 doesn’t have a charging dock option, so I had to add it to my backpack, and there’s no versatile charger to take its place.
