Earlier this year, Framework announced that he was making a small, 12-inch laptop and a beef desktop to go with his 13– and 16-inch notebooks. A few months later, and the east has come, the same modular, repaired laptop put into a slightly small body. Unlike its elder siblings, the laptop is 12.2-inch touchscreen convertible clad in 12 bright colored plastic. This is aimed at the purpose of students, which, with focus on strengthening and quality you will not see in general machines you find at the top of the list of bargaining. My initial belief is that it is a very attractive piece of gear, but I immediately wonder how many children in school will actually get to use this thing, as it is far from their rivals.

The laptop 12 is completely the first framework machine clad in ABS plastic, which is available in black, pink, lavender, gray and green. As soon as you open the packaging, you will immediately be mesmerized by its look and feel how different it is from the rest of the market. My Green and Off-White Review Unit (called the company “SEZ”) stands out almost from the crowd. Framework founder Nirav Patel has dreams of bringing back the transit and colorful aesthetics found in Nintendo’s game boy color for a long time. Here, 12 reminiscent of Olpc XO or a radical leapfrog “computer”, which shone when you were not seeing.
Its footprint is not dramatically smaller than a 13-inch model, but because it is not like its elder siblings, it looks too much. The chassis has a metal frame clad in two layers of plastic, which promises the company, which will throw the shock and bumps on it. It also has the same quarter of the expansion card slot, which is now available in different types of colors if you want things to match (or clash). In addition, all those cards can be shared with other framework machines because they all, kind, similar size.
Framework clearly learned from creating its big machines, adding many quality of life in 12 for both daily use and repair. Those who regularly open their framework laptops and close will immediately look at the changes that will make things very easy. For a beginning, the input cover is conducted with more screws (compared to five of eight, 13), which balances better stress in the surface area. The input cover now slots the grooves on the deck front, making it easier to make space than 13. More importantly, the input cover connects to the mainboard via pogo pin rather than a ribbon cable. I don’t think I have ever damaged a ribbon cable myself, but it is always a matter of concern if a person first tries to close the lid without disconnecting it from the mainboard.
Instead of spoiling SSD in place, the framework now uses a hinged plastic clip that you press to secure the drive. Similarly, there is a slightly flip-down plastic cover to protect Ram, when you install Dimm to flip it back with a large printed reminder. Naturally, the board layout has changed, as the battery is – in a small, 50Wh cell – so the mainboard and battery will not work with their slightly elder brother -in -law.
(On one side: If you are a fond, hopefully the 12-inch mainboard will be dramatically smaller than a 13-inch model to create small projects, expected to be disappointed. It is small, but not from such an important degree that you probably don’t use just 13-inch models instead.)
The power button has been moved from the keyboard to the right of the deck, next to the expansion card slot. There is no fingerprint reader, either, which is one of many lapses that you can give character for “cost savings”, “It is a machine made for children” or Both,
Buyers will get the option of 13th generation core i3-1315U or a core i5-1334U, which can support DDR5 RAM up to 48GB, only on slow DDR5-5200. You can throw away with 2TB storage in a m.2 SSD, and if it is not enough, you can get an additional 256GB or 1TB unit to sit in one of the four expansion card slots of the laptop.
Patel knows enough about the keyboard and trackpad what works and what they like, not messing with it. The keyboard and touchpad are as strong and pleasant as you find on a 13 -inch model. I am not sure yet, but I can really like to type on a 12-inch keyboard compared to 13, perhaps due to all the east-plastic builds and a little loud, puncher keyclies.
This machine was introduced as a better, long-lasting and more durable option for those dirt-cheap laptops sold to children and students. But when everything already mentioned is quite good, we soon start seeing where the cost-saving trims have been created. It is the first structure to ship with a touchscreen, which is 12.2 inches with a maximum brightness of 400 NITs, 1,920 x 1,200 shiny LCD. In short, this is the same screen that you will find on very few notebooks and therefore adjust your expectations accordingly. Shine is a commercial danger, it is a touchscreen, but weak backlight means that you will deal with the washed view in normal high-disciplines and bright light.
Framework is currently developing its own stylus, but until it is launched, the laptop is compatible with any USI 2.0 or MPP 2.0 stylus. You have to create your source now, and for review, I was supplied with one Metapen M2 For testing. So far, however, I have found the pen experience more than a bit disappointing, in which palm rejection is a major issue. It requires a twice – and I am sure it will be addressed rapidly – seeing that I opened a menu or closed a window with meat on the edge of my hand.
Similarly, the 2-megapixel webcam is a big step from the 9.2-megapixel sensor found in a 13-inch model. Again, you can expect the same washed, artifacts-water videos as you will find in many other low-cost laptop cameras.
Framework has worked to improve its sound quality over the last few years, but the size of 12 of 12 is a limited factor. Here the pair of 2W speakers is also tinni and calm, but at least they do not rattle or vibrate with heavy bass.
My review unit was equipped with a core i5 with 16GB RAM, and it was able to handle the type of goods you would expect to perform on this class machine. Writing the wholesale of this review, watching videos, watching and tying images is all well within the reach of this machine. Hell, I also managed to get Hardspace: Shipbreaker To play, but not very well, and while Fortnite Walks, it is enough to not be worth your time. Again, ticked drivers will be likely to clean those issues, but I suspect that this machine does not have enough grunt for doom room gamers.
Of course, this is a framework laptop, so you can already estimate a major issue that you put the silicon under the load. As always, fan noise is very noticeable when the hardware temperature rises, and I would not recommend you to use this thing on your lap. And you should expect this thing to be plugged for the period of your time, because the battery is not a lifestyle. If you are using it to run any type of demand app or game, you will not get more than four hours on a charge.
Pricing and competition
Right now, you can only buy pre-made version in black, the only place with the DIY version. You can choose your chassis color. It is available in gray, lavender, bubblegum and sage, and I will heartily consult you to choose any of those options on standard black. The pre-Belt Edition starts at $ 799, with Intel Core i3-1315U, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD and Windows 11 Homes. If you want to step up to high-end display models with i5-1334u, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, it will set you back $ 1,049 back. On the other hand, you can pick up the DIY version for $ 549 (for i3) or $ 699 (for i5), leaving your own RAM, SSD and OS for sources.
I believe that I am struggling to work, what are the contestants of Framework 12, because it is a difficult machine. When? I am fond of framework laptop 12 because I can easily see it in a place in my life when I am walking. It is cute, good looking and small, when you are in a hurry you can easily throw it into a bag. The durability of chassis and repair, as well as the swapable expansion card, means that it should last for years and years. And it’s fun! I like the idea of a small laptop that stands against the endless lines of cheap black plastic or silver aluminum notebooks.
Those dirt-cheap notebooks are made with low-ended parts and are not very good for children and students for $ 300 or are not very good. If you want quality, you will need to cough for it, and it will last without endless replacement for at least years.
But. Limited performance and battery life stops me here and I am not sure a machine that needs a stretch to run right now Fortnite Will be very popular. My intestine tells me that the framework intended to sell it at least before the tariff pushed the prices up, which understood.
