When you hear about AI features on smartphones, you often think of the most attractive, agent AI features that can work for you without raising a finger. However, I have a firm belief that the litmus is tested whether AI is worth the feature, whether it should be whether it is returning the real value in your life, whether it is time or money, and in the best case, both. This transcription feature in Voice Memo does this.
As a reporter, my job interview recording is included. These interviews require transcaribing not only to draw quotes, but also to make it easier to pass through long interviews. Ever since the underground, I have trusted services such as otter.ai, which has also come in handy for other uses, such as meeting meetings, lectures and conferences.

He said, Apple Intelligence Voice Memo Transcription feature solved a major issue that I did with the transcription service, and I am probably never going back – and why you should not do this here, if you are an apple user who gives importance to a bang for your deer.
Otter.ai gel
Before I explain what makes the Apple Intelligence feature good, I need to explain the biggest issue with its more popular competitive, Otter.ai. Transcription service used AI to provide high quality transcription long before the technique exploded in popularity.
While otter.ai has a free subscription tier, it allows only three lifetime audio/video files and 300 monthly minutes, which if you are using it regularly, a meeting, interview, or lecture can be 60 minutes long alone.
However, I was ready to deal with it, most of the time, I simply logged in from different emails whenever I hit a limit, and the transcription was mostly accurate, with a convenient and easy interface.

My last straw was to be sent to otter.ai jail.
Essentially, if you are on an independent plan, otter.ai only lets you see your 25 most recent conversations. More than 25 old conversations are stored and inaccessible. This is particularly problematic, if me, like me, you need access to your recording after months, then for class, or for an article.
The worst thing is that you cannot export audio, even if you have recorded it in the app. The only way to access it is to upgrade $ 17 per month to Oter Pro. Once this happened, I knew that I had to find an option: Apple’s voice memorandum.
Apple Voice Memo Transcription (and how to access)
Since my daily driver is an iPhone 16 Pro, I already record most of my voice memo on the app. By covering the Apple intelligence on a large scale, I knew that there was a transcription option, so I decided to try it.
After months of using it, I found the transcription accurate. Most importantly, it is not only free to access, but it is very easy to do so without exporting files. You all need iOS 18.0 or later iPhone 12 or later, which makes it one of the more accessible characteristics of Apple. The comprehensive suite of Apple’s AI features is available only for the phone with the A17 Pro chip or higher, including the iPhone 15 Pro or later.

Then, to reach the tapes, click on an icon that looks like a quotation mark inside an idea bubble when recording a live transcript. Or, you can see the text after the fact. With otter.ai, if you click on the text, it will run this audio, which I often do to verify the accuracy of transcription or grab some words that can be missed.
Although it lacks some devices that are in otter.ai, such as the ability to highlight or connect the comments, you can choose the material and copy it to another app or document, and you can also choose to copy the entire transcript and import it elsewhere. I have done this earlier and imported it to Google Doc so that I can highlight more easily or make notes. The best part is knowing that my audio messages are not going to be closed behind a pawall at any time.
If you start recording in the Voice Memo app or reach tapes, you can follow the step-by-step instructions, you can follow Apple’s step-by-step guideBut as mentioned above, the process is very comfortable.
My favorite part of this feature? A reminder that may be easy to be good for AI features.
