Sandisk’s new WD Black SN8100 PCIE GEN5 is fast, skilled and engineer to meet the demands of SSD gamers and power users.
The drive uses a PCIE Gen5 X4 interface and is available in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capabilities. Built around the in-house 8-channel controller and BICS 3D TLC Nand of Sandisk, it supports the reading speed up to 14.5 GB/s and writes up to 12.7 GB/S, keeping it currently available among the fastest Gen5 drives available.
However, despite the state-of-the-art design and influential benchmarks of SN8100, Intel’s now-Difunction, four-year-old Optain P5800x still crowns as the fastest SSD in real-world use.
Benchmarks suggest top speed – but not crossing the board
In synthetic benchmarks such as crystaldiscMark and ATTO, SN8100 breaks the lab record for sequential throwuput and random reed, reaching 2.3 million IOPs.

It also displays notable efficiency, consumes only 7 watts under the load and requires without any active cooling, making it the best SSD or the best portable SSD for enthusiastic build.
Nevertheless, synthetic benchmarks do not always reflect the performance of the real world. In practical transfer tests, SN8100 finished ninth in total, showing that it is very sharp, it is not without limitations, and it does not separate the Intel Optain P5800x.
Launched in 2021, P5800x is unmatched in real world accountability and delay. While its sequential reed speed top out at 7.2 GB/s – is slower than the SN8100 – its random reed/right is more than IOPS over 4.5 million, and delay often falls below 10 microcecands. This is where it really shines.
Flash-based SSDs such as SN8100 still rely on garbage collection and page-level management, which leads to topical delays spikes during small, random charge.
