It seems that cloud storage services promise all similar features: a small data allowance, security, and a little more. That is,, except one of all low-term options, except which provides more than the rest.

The best cloud storage you are probably not using

This is the best free cloud storage – I can’t believe that more people are not using it

That is the option MegaA cloud storage platform is quietly correcting everything while the spotlight lives on normal names. Mega is far from the new (it was launched in 2013), but it is constantly ignored, even though it provides one of the best free schemes available.

To start, you get free storage of 20GB. Compare this to 15GB of Google Drive, which you also share with gmail and photo, or 2GB of dropbox, and it is clear that the mega gives you too much space to work.

But storage is just the beginning. The one who actually separates the mega is privacy. Most cloud services encryps your files on their server, meaning that they still have keys. The mega takes a different approach using end-to-end encryption by default. Your files are encrypted on your device before you are sent to the cloud, and only you have a decryption key. Even the mega cannot access itself which you have uploaded.

The interface is clean, intuitive, and is available on every major platform: Windows, McOS, Android, iOS and Linux. You can pull and leave files, share folders, and passwords can generate safe links with security and expiration dates, all without paying one percent.

Stack the mega against normal cloud storage players such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Onedrive, and the value that it provides becomes even more clear.

Storage space is the most obvious win. The mega gives you 20GB free, which has opportunities to unlock more through alternative achievements such as installing mobile apps or referring to friends. The dropbox only gives 2GB until you pay. ONEDRIVE provides 5GB. Google drives give 15GB, but that location is shared in Gmail, Google photos and drives, so it disappears rapidly.

Then there is security, where the mega actually pulls forward. Most mainstream platforms encryps your data, but they also control encryption keys. This means that they can access your files if necessary. The mega does not work like this. It uses zero-knowledge encryption, which means that only you have the key to your content. No one can go inside your files without your permission.

Why I never rely on single data backup method

It is waiting for a disaster.

For features, the mega includes all the basics: file version, folder sharing, team cooperation options, and even a built -in safe chat. It does not have a suit for Google’s live-editing tools, but it is more than enough for everyday backup, personal file sharing, or light team use.

Performance-wise, it is solid. Upload and download speeds are generally reliable, although they may vary depending on your region and network conditions. For most users, it is enough to feel comfortable.

This is not correct, but trade-offs are minor

Mega web interface is showing files uploaded

Any cloud service is not everything nail, and mega is no exception. However, its downside are minor and manageable.

The largest range transfer is quota. When you can store 20GB (or more) for free, mega can upload or download the data within a certain period of time. The exact quota varies and is not always transparent, but free users can sometimes kill a wall, especially when transferring large files. In that case, you have to wait before continuing. It is a problem, but manageable for accidental use.

Another business is closed cooperation. The mega does not offer live editing tools such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word. You can share files and folders and also relaxly supported by synchronizing changes, but if you need real-time co-written, you will need to work around it with external devices.

There is also a heritage goods. Some users are still careful with the origin of the mega, as it was established by Kim Dotcom of Mega Opported fame. But it is important to clarify that Dotcom left the company years ago.

How do I encrypt my files before uploading on Cloud (and why I bother)

It takes only a moment to make your files more secure.

Mega cloud is not the most loud name in storage, but it should probably be. With 20GB free space, the underlying end-to-end encryption, and a simple interface that works in devices provides more than the largest name services without asking for a dime.

Sure, this is not right. But to share everyday storage, backup and private file, it is a hidden gem.

If you are using every final gigabyte on your current cloud plan or just want a more private option, then mega is an option worth serious ideas. It can be one of the best free cloud tools available today.
