I like strange and unconventional movies a lot. I went into “Holi Motors” thinking that it would be one of the slow, artistic French films that people only pretend to understand. Instead, I got a total mind-melter.
Star Dennis Lavant manages to live a dozen different lives in a night during this fever dream of a film, and somehow makes everyone feel real. One minute he is a motion-capture actor in a screwdite suit, the next he is a sewer-doubt Goblin who is eating flowers and licking people.
A limo, a strange agreement brake, a Kylie Minogue is a musical number, and there is absolutely no explanation for any of it. And for all those reasons and more, it cannot be cooler.
It sounds like chaos, and it is – but it is strangely emotional and beautiful. You will not get it completely (no one does), but you will feel it. If you are in films that raise you a little question on reality, then “Holy Motors” is worth a visit. And it’s streaming for free Tuby For a very short time before removing it. So if you want to see it, you do not have much time left.
What about ‘Holy Motors’?
Mahashi Oscar (Lavant) is a mysterious person who spends his day riding around Paris in a white limosine, spending wildly on a series of different “assignments”. Each stop turns it into a new character. It can be a dying father, a beggar woman, a hitman, a sewer monster, or anything really anything. All complete with makeup, dress and a new identity.
The Oscar throws himself in each role such as it is life or death. He is not acting, though. He is living these lives, one after the other, there is no break in the middle, if you can assume so.
One minute, the Oscar stabbing a man in a suit; Next, he is giving rest to a dying daughter; Then, he is a wild -eye troll that is eating flowers and kidnapping models.
There is no explanation for who he is or why he is doing it, and you should not really find one in the film. His driver gives him a calm signal, but no one ever asks questions. The world around him simply rolls with it. Even when it does not make sense, which happens frequently, everyone still feels peacefully what is happening on the screen.
You begin to be surprised: is he an actor? a puppet? Is this all for anyone’s entertainment? Or it is just the same as it is present, being constantly being made as someone else, because it is too much to live on its own?
By the end, “Holi Motors” remains silent about its real intentions. It just leaves you with a strange, dull feeling that perhaps performance is only one thing while maintaining the Oscar (and the rest of us).
Why you should stream ‘Holy Motors’
You should stream “Holy Motors” because in fact there is nothing like it, and Lavant gives one of the most crazy, committed performances you will see anytime.
He does not just play a character. He plays 10, back-to-back without a second to breathe. And somehow, each one feels completely real. You stop trying to find out what is going on and simply pulled together for the ride. This alone makes it worth catching before it is not available to check for free.
This is strange, yes. But this is the kind of strange that sticks to you. Lavant goes into all, and it is clear that it all involves: physical, emotionally, everything, and you forget that you are watching a performance. This is why it is so good. Once you have seen “Holy Motors”, you will find why people will not stop about it.
