In the AI-fast world we live, smartphone in auxiliary AI matters more and more for buyers. As a result, the chipset behind these devices has to become increasingly powerful to support these features, and the new chipset of Qualcomm only raised the ant.
In a conversation with GM of Durga Malladi, SVP and Technology Scheme, Edge Solutions and Data Center in Qualcomm, he told me that Snapdragon 8 Elite General 5 3B parameters supported up to 220 tokens per second when using the small language model. These data make Snapdragon 8 Elite Jean 5, which is the fastest mobile SOC to run the Reasoning Model on on-devices, Compared to other published numbers,

“If you think about it, we have gone close to 20, it is like a 10x increase in tokens per second that you now get,” Malladi said. “I can’t read 200 words per second. None of us can do it.”
I spoke with Malladi on Wednesday, when Qualcomm unveiled her latest mobile platform, Snapdragon 8 Elite Jean 5 chipset at her annual Snapdragon summit. The launch emphasized its ability to fuel even more advanced AI experiences, which provide improvement in photography, videography, audio, gaming and certainly, AI-infections.

Tokens refer to the amount of information per second that the AI models can consume or process in a given time. More tokens that a model can process at a time, rapid users can experience and perform more complex tasks-device. On-device is particularly important because it no longer contributes to low delay, but also increases privacy as it keeps information on the device, bypassing the cloud.
“This is something that can be used very quickly (if) you had just one PDF, perhaps in a language, and you just wanted to literally translate it immediately, in some other language. This can be done in a really fast way,” Malladi said.
