I have not used a PC in a year. Well, almost. There is a reason that I need to be a traditional computer at home, and ensure that other gadgets in my life get their latest software updates.
I have used my foldable phone for more than a year as my PC
Android is receiving a desktop mode. Apple is adding features like desktop to iPad. Samsung is the dex – and it is what I already use. I have written about the ways that Samsung Dex is ready to change a PC and how I use dex compared to Chromebook.

I am living a dream
Recently, however, I have not used dex. I do all my work from the internal screen of my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. I am writing these words using a gesture swipe from my stylus. When my daughter sees me working, she sits next to me with her notepad and pen, because this is what my work looks like her.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a foldable smartphone that combines the functionality of a tablet with the facility of a phone. It has a large, flexible internal screen that automatically picks up where you leave on the cover display.
I can write, take and edit pictures, upload work, and try software from my phone. Certainly, there are many software that only support PCs, but I am able to work around it such as Chromebook users. My ability to completely separate all relationships with a laptop has been only a showstopper.
Many things, big and small, firmware updates are required
I recently bought a nintendo switch 2. If I was not a parent, I would be saved for a beefier gaming PC instead, but the family-friendly sofa multiplayer provided by the switch is not better. Still when we went to pair our personal favorite Bluetooth controller, we were unable to do it. It turned out, it required a firmware update.
My Kia Nero EV has a similar story for navigation software. I accidentally thought that the dealer handles something. Kia provides an update to flash a USB stick and plugs into your car (Kia is not unique in this regard).
These days, we are not only downloading updates for our PC, phone and game system. In fact, any tool or gadget can get a firmware update at any point.
The problem is that many products are not valued at updating themselves. My wife’s car can update itself over-the-air. My manual effort requires, and the software is available only for Windows or Mac.
This means that I do not have the ability to update my car, which I use pocket PC.
You may think that it makes sense, looking at the physical limitations of a phone – but I plug the flash drive in my phone all the time. With the use of a phone dock or USB-C hub, connecting the old flash drive is also no problem.
To be clear, limiting the software Windows and Mac affects more people than some of us, who are all on the Samsung dex or those who drool on the multitasking facilities shown on the iPad in this year’s WWDC. Chromeos and General Linux users will also have to deal with the tools updating firmware that are not released to their platforms. I know. I spent many years using the original Chromebook Pixel, and I was a desktop Linux user for a long time.
For now, I borrow someone else’s PC
I mentioned that Bluetooth controller earlier? For credits of 8bitdo, the update was painless. I just downloaded the update tool in my wife’s MacBook, connected the controller through a USB cable, and waited for a few moments to update the flash.
My wife’s computer has been lacking for most of my adult life, as she usually has a Windows PC or MacBook. It has given me freedom to experiment with other methods of computing, knowing that there is a backup machine that may come to the rescue. Yet this has been the first time last year when I have not done least Linux PC for my name.
It’s not this way
Not every product requires PC. I have bought a lot of switchbott smart home accessories, and I can apply those updates in a wireless manner using the Android app.

I woke up for a power outage this morning, and one of the portable power stations that I used to return my home, informed me on the Android app that there is a firmware update that I can apply as online for my Wi-Fi.
If I can plug into an external hard drive and backup hundreds of data of data, flashing the firmware that often contain some signs of some megabytes such as a solved problem. This is just companies need to feel that the market has changed. In a world where someone’s steam deck (whose desktop mode is based on Arch Linux) can be all computers that they need, Windows and Mac no longer the game in the city.

Why do I refuse to buy another Windows PC
I have not seen an appeal for ten years.
For some time, I have been living in the course. I often do not need to apply firmware updates, and my wife’s MacBook stays on standby. But I think the desktop mode of Android has started killing people’s pixels, more people are going to be in my position.
