- Silicon Motion SM8466 SSD Data brings enterprise-grade speed and safety for the future of data infrastructure
- Nand up to 512TB prepares this controller for tomorrow’s storage-hawi workload
- The scale is designed for the scale, not your setup, this SSD will probably be in the server room
The new SM8466 SSD controller of silicon motion makes a strong case for the next generation storage.
Buced using the 4Nm process of TSMC, the controller has been engineered to the performance-intellect and the PCIE claims to double the throughput of 5.0 devices.
But when its specifications can be sewn to the fastest SSD in enterprise settings, its practical relevance for consumer desktop remains suspicious, at least for now.
Performance figures promise a jump, but for whom?
Silicon motion claims that SM8466 may hit the extreme sequential reed speed of 28GB per second, through the throughputs of PCIE 5.0 solutions about twice.
Such a performance may be ideal for real-time analytics, massive database operations and high-quality media processing, but for most users, such capabilities are more than everyday requirements.
For reading, 7 million random IOPs (input/output operations per second) and write, suggest its adaptation to the virtual environment and high-load scenarios, where the delay should be reduced and the response time should be kept consistent.
Does it make it qualified as the best SSD, it is a matter of perspective, especially given the limited relevance to the mainstream PC.
From a system design point of view, the controller’s support for nand up to 512TB is promising for hypersscale storage application.
However, this jump in storage capacity is not ready to redefine the consumer market.
Even the largest HDD options currently available for the use of desktops do not arrive on this scale, and integrating such a capacity in a single PCI SSD would be challenging challenging outside data centers both cost-reliable and thermal.
Beyond raw performance, SM8466 includes a suit of facilities leading towards enterprise purinogen.
It supports safe booting, AES -256 encryption and TCG OPAL compliance, which aims to meet modern data security requirements simultaneously.
Its smart monitoring system adds an additional layer of diagnostics and initial failure, but these features are more useful in server racks than home rigs.
Physically, the SCA interface consolidates strength, data and management in a single connector, streamlines the installation and reduces cableing complexity.
Virtualization technology such as SR-Iv and MPF allows the controller to introduce several virtual storage functions, which strengthens its appeal to cloud service providers rather than average users.
The benefits of SM8466 are evident for large-scale, high-deserving environment, but the average consumer is unlikely to experience these benefits before the decade ends.
