The US federal judiciary confirmed that it faced a cyber attack on its electronic case management system, hosting confidential court documents and strengthening cyber security measures.
The organization said that, while most of the documents in the system are public, some seal filing contains sensitive information that is now protected with strict access control aimed at blocking hackers.
“The federal judiciary is taking additional steps to strengthen safety for documents of sensitive cases in response to a sophisticated and frequent nature’s recently increased cyber attack on its case management system,” Reads the announcement,
“The judiciary is further enhancing the security of the system and blocking future attacks, and is prioritizing working with courts to reduce the impact on cases.”
The agency also underlined that cyber attacks have increased in quantity and sophistication in both public and private institutions, and protecting heritage systems is becoming more challenging.
This statement came in response A Politico Report Earlier this week, it was claimed that there was a violation of the case management system of the US court system, highlighting sensitive information, including the identity of confidential informers.
Politico stated that Breach influenced several federal districts, which directly affects CM/ECF and Pesar, which is the backbone of the federal court document management.
According to anonymous sources providing this information, the judiciary became aware of the entire seriousness of the incident on July 4, 2025, and followed the relevant briefing without making any public announcement about it.
