Ethereum co-founder Vitallic Butterin and Researcher Tony Wahstätter have carried forward the EIP-7983, which aims to introduce a protocol-tier hat on the use of transactions to increase network safety and performance.

Proposal The maximum gas range for individual transactions determine the volume of 16.77 million (2 of). “By implementing this limit, Ethereum can increase its flexibility against some DOS vectors, improve network stability, and transactions can provide more predictions to processing costs,” reads the proposal.

Under the current atherium (Eth) architecture, a single transaction can theoretically consume the gas range of the entire block, leading to the risk of refusal-service (DOS) attacks and leading to unexpected network behavior.

By capping individual transactions, the EIP-7983 attempts to distribute the consumption of gas more equally, which reduces the chances of single transaction.

Gas cap to promote zkvm compatibility

The proposed cap is also designed to improve compatibility with zero-knowledge virtual machines (ZKVMS), which can be encouraged to divide large transactions into small portions.

According to the draft, transactions specifying more than 16.77 million gas limitations will be rejected during block verification, ensuring that they cannot enter the network or be included in new blocks. The CAP is independent of the overall block gas range, which the miners and verification can still adjust within the existing consensus rules.

Buterin and Wahstätter chose 16.77 million as CAP to balance complexity and performance, arguing that it adjusts without presenting unnecessary risks to the deployment of the current advanced defi use cases and contracts.

“This value enables most current use cases, including contracting and advanced DEFI interactions, ensuring continuous performance characteristics,” reads the proposal.

While the proposal is not backward-compatible for more transactions than the new limit, the authors stated that most existing transactions come down well from the cap, reducing the impact on users and developers.

The EIP-7983 makes pre-efforts such as EIP-7825 to improve the prophecy in transactions.

    Wants to simplify vitallic atherium

In May, the minimum approach of Bitcoin asked to simplify the base protocol of the atherium network to promote efficiency, safety and access.

At that time, he reorganized the architecture of Atherium across the unanimous, execution and shared components to achieve a lean design within five years. Balnen argued that the increasing complexity of the atherium has inspired to increase the time, high cost and security risks at the time of development.
