The desktop Linux ecosystem is gradually migrating from the X11 in VYland, leaving some desktop atmosphere behind. The Wayback Project aims to fix it, and it has just reached its first preview release.
First, some unix history. X window systemCurrently known as X11, the main method of displaying graphical interfaces on Linux and Unix-based systems from decades. It accumulated many performances, purpose and security problems, which cannot be addressed without adequate rewriting, hence Veil Was built as a possible replacement. Yland is now used by default instead of X11 on Ubuntu, Fedora Workstation, Debian and many other Linux distribution.
Even if you can run the application under Vayland which were designed for X11, with the underlying Xwayland compatibility layer, the same is not true for the desktop environment. General desktop environment (Cde) and Window manufacturer Do not support Wiland. Met Velland is progressing on support, and lxqt is Most functional On Yalaland but still “experimental” is considered.
New ‘webac’ project This problem is a workaround, as it creates an X11 server at the top of VYland for the desktop environment. Documentation explains, “Our goal is to be completely drop-in replacement for the Xorg binary for webac, thus reduces the burden of maintenance for distro maintenors.”
Wayback 0.1 is the first preview release, and it is already available in package managers for Fedora, Arc Linux (AUR), Alpine and other distribution. It is still highly experimental – for example, there is no support for many monitor or mouse locking – but it is an impressive first release. Some of the developers are “already daily-driving so that they can find bugs and fix them.”
It is worth noting that webacs and vendors are not related at all. XLIBRE ProjectThe fork that wants to keep the X11 alive with modern enrichment. Its developers claim that “the toxic elements within the Xorg projects are boycotting any adequate work on Moles, Xorg,” and they are demanding “making x great again”. In fact, Yland was designed to solve problems with X11 Many of the same people working on X11There are no reasons left for using X11 on a Linux computer instead of Yland, and the webac is fixing one of the few remaining edge cases.
The release blog post stated, “Ever since the weback was announced on June 28, we are making a lot of progress to get it as stable and functional as possible, and while it is a preview release, it is already daily-concealed by users with simple needs until they consider Bugs bad.”
