WhatsApp is asked to develop a new feature for its Android app, which aims to improve photography in low light conditions. According to a feature tracker report, a dedicated night mode option is available in the camera interface of the beta version of the instant messaging app. It allegedly optimize the image clarity and glitter, when shooting in a low-light environment, without applying any overlay or stylization to the image.

WhatsApp feature tracker according to wabetainfoThe night mode option was discovered in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.22.2, named as a compatible update. Instant messaging clients owned by the meta platform can develop it for release in the future version of the app.

Based on the above screenshot shared by the feature tracker, a moon icon is added next to the flash icon on the top right corner of the camera interface. Tapping it leads to night mode to togle. However, it does not automatically switch depending on the state of ambient light and requires a manual switch.
The in-development feature is asked to adjust the exposure of the image and to implement software-based reforms to reduce the noise, when captured in a low-light environment. According to WABETAINFO, it enables the camera to capture more detail in the shade without the need of a dedicated source of external light. This feature is claimed to prove useful when capturing indoor shots or night time when natural light is not enough.
However, it can only bring a “minor” improvement in image quality if the photo is captured in extremely low light landscapes. This will not produce an extremely bright and wide image, and is not called a replacement for professional photography.
Wabetainfo reports that the camera interface is available to select the night mode options beta testers that are registered through the Google Play Beta program. This feature can be rolled out for more users in the coming weeks with the future version of the app.
