It has been a week when I wiped out Windows 11 from my Lenovo Legion Go Handheld and changed it with the first official version of Steamos for other handheld other than the steam deck.
I am doing “work” by playing as much as I intervene, and now that I have given Stemos a good honesty, I have some ideas how this experience is better (or worse) just compared to sticking with Windows 11 in your hand.
Steamos is just smooth
My first observation is purely subjective, but then it is a subjective experience that matters more than a difficult number to play video games.
What I have seen is that the games immediately feel smooth under Steamos compared to Windows 11. One of the reasons for this is that Steamos provides pre-caced shadar downloads, so the game is not stuttering in the game. However, even in the games that pretend shades under the windows, they felt smooth and lacked microstuting.
The biggest surprise was Marvel’s midnight sunWhich I had to stop playing in my hand under the windows because it was very tempering, despite reading the frame rate, above 30fps. Now, feels the game and looks great to play, and the only thing I changed was the operating system.

User experience is much better than Windows
In addition to performance and battery life, the second major advantage of steamos is how much better it is from the user experience’s point of view. For one thing, I can now suspend in my hand in the middle of a game without any issue. Like a nintendo switch or a playstation vita.
This is something that really needs to be sorted, as it is a major reason that I hate playing anything on that operating system. I should have the option to put in my hand on a moment notice, or what is the matter?
Second, the real interface is fantastic. Steamos has an alternative desktop mode, but you should never see it if you don’t want. The interface is touch and controller-friendly, this is the first and only thing you see on the boot, and it is better than any console interface, if not better.
Perhaps the most important thing, I can do Just start playing When I wake up in my hand now. There is no update, no popup, no endless notification or other Windows fuck I have to deal with when I just want to play a few minutes Forza horizon.
Windows is compatible with many more games
I have more than 1000 games in my steam library, and Stemos are compatible with only 550 of them. At its top, all PC games I require a little legwork to go to steamos using devices such as GOG or EPIC Games Store, such as Gog or EPIC Games Store, Brave sports launcher,
While compatibility will increase over time, now if you use windows, then you have peace of mind that all Windows games are available to you. What’s more, I was mainly enjoying the PC game pass on my handheld instead of my desktop PC gaming setup, but, of course, it is not available under steamos.
I do not play multiplayer games, so it does not bother me that they do not work on steamos due to anti-chest software, but if you want to play primarily online games then steamos will not be the right choice.

Battery life is better under steamos
As various people have now seen, battery life gets a good positive kick in pants, when the same system is switched to steamos from Windows. One reason for this reason is that Windows has more irrelevant goods that are running in the background which has been stripped of steamos, but in my opinion there is more more for it,
I have to note that Stemos have not yet to use TDP control for the original Legion Go that I am still using, although you receive it on the new legends GoS model that ships with steamos. This means that I am only using Crude TDP preset of Legion Go (I know Dave2D To pass
I am sure that I can get even more battery life with better tuning, but the real reason that I am getting long battery life is because the lubrication and performance of the game has improved in less TDP settings. Under Windows I had to run practically the maximum tDP to emphasize some sports in a playable position. Now, I can use a more frugal “balanced” mode that gives me two or more hours of battery power, and yet enjoys a decent gaming experience.

Steamos is independent and open-source
Perhaps this is clear, but the steamos does not spends you anything as a user. This is opposite Windows that adds a lot of cost to your hand. However, I already have a Windows handheld, so what difference does it make? Well, for one thing, it was free to turn from Windows to Steamos, but Stemos also does not bomb me with other advertisements other than the store page where I expect it.
Windows has known issues with telemetry collections, unwanted features such as recall, and Microsoft 365, Ondrive to sign up to the continuous serpent to sign up to services such as Ondrive, and of course, using Microsoft Edge.
Until some skeletons are exposed in this open-source distro of Linux, I think it is appropriate to say that Steamos does not invest in harvesting your data. In addition, while the steamos client is not open-source, Stemos is an open source in itself as Linux has distrned by Linux. It already brings a level of transparency to steamos that cannot match the window

Should you switch to steamos?
If you are the owner of a handheld PC who can officially run steamos, I can completely recommend that most people try it. If you have no objection to wiping in your hand, it takes less than five minutes to install the steamos, and you will walk up and in no time. If you do not like it, you can always restore your handheld factory Windows image, and as long as your save game is backup in cloud or disc, you are going to burn some time to download your game again.

This is possible for double boot steamos and windows, although many people have to upgrade their SSDs for it. I have only 512GB SSD, which is in my legends go, so dual-booting is not practical, but honestly I do not want to do so. I have other Windows gaming systems, so if I really want to play a game that does not work on Stemos, I will resign it myself to play on my gaming laptop.
While there is more work to be done, and is ready to go to the larger steamos and if you have the opportunity, I am of my opinion that you should try it completely until you want to play a specific game, do not work on the steamos … Still.
