“Blast from the past” saw me for the first time when I saw it. It looked like a foolish, mid-turner romantic comedy that was built around a fish-out-watter gag and Brandon Fraser, who was routing its best AW-Shucks.
And of course, it is light and silly on the surface. A man is picked up in a fallout shelter, swing dancing in a dinner, and Sisi Spacek taught his son like a courtesy as it is 1962.
But give it a second look, and it is making some much more smarter, because it gets credit for it. The “Blast from the past” is actually a gentle, fun criticism of a soft, modern condolence, which is wrapped in the Cold War time capsules.
