Japanese beer -making veteran Asahi has today revealed that a ransomware attack caused IT disruption, which forced it to shut down factories this week.
Tokyo -based Beverages Holding Company is the largest beer brooer in Japan, provided employment to 30,000 people and produced 100 million hectares of beverages.
The company also has Peroni, Pilsner Urkel, Growles, and Fullers brands, and reported an annual revenue of about $ 20 billion in 2024.
Asahi revealed in a statement today that a cyber attack on Monday revealed that ransomware was deployed on its network and subsequent investigation has also found evidence of data theft from the equipment compromised.
The company said on Monday, “Asahi Group Holdings, Ltd are currently experiencing a system failure due to a cyber attack affecting operations in Japan.”
While Asahi has now confirmed that a ransomware attack has hit its system, no ransomware operations have claimed responsibility for the attack, meaning that the company has not either responded to the demands of the attackers, is still negotiating, or has already paid ransom.
The company said, “When the incident ascertained, we established an emergency response headquarters to investigate the incident, through which we confirmed that our servers were targeted by a rangesware attack,” the company said today.
“The latter investigation has confirmed the mark suggesting the potentially unauthorized transfer of the data. We are investigating to determine the nature and scope of information that may be subject to unauthorized transfer.”
Bleepingcomputer has not yet received an answer after reaching ASAI, after the initial disclosure whether any cyber crime groups demanded ransom and the system was encrypted on the company’s network.
According to Asahi, while the ransomware attack has only affected factories in Japan, it has forced the company to switch to manual order processing and shipment as its “system-based order and shipment processes have been suspended.”
“While we are unable to provide a clear time for recovery at this time, our emergency response headquarters is working to restore the system as soon as possible in collaboration with external cyber security experts. The scope of disintegration of the system is currently limited to Japan,” it is noted.
