This means that they are naturally equipped to answer questions around the organizational strategy. Ask them what their priorities are, and how your work contributes to the priorities they care.
- Share “on the ground” insightNo matter how many hands they are, senior leaders are often cut off from day to day work. As an individual contributor, you are well equipped to share the experience of working both good and bad. This can be particularly valuable if you can suggest ideas to improve the productivity of all.
- Be honest with responseFor a truly effective skip-level meeting you should be oblivious to share real problems and provide honest response. This is an opportunity to discuss systemic issues that your direct managers cannot address on their own.
In Pinterest, one of the first decisions I had to do was which team I would join within the company. If I had taken advice properly from the director, I could have received valuable response about areas with high-primaryity in the company. Whether you are new or not in a company, do not understand the value of having a relationship with your management chain.
